This is underground in Paris. Not a lot of people know

Stephen alvarez: paris underground

This is something I found truly interesting. And I really want the share.

in a series for national geographic, photographer stephen alvarez explores the vast network of underground paris
perhaps the best known of france's subterranean architecture, an estimated 6 million bodies are piled in these catacombs, transferred from the cimetieres des saints-innocents from 1780 - 1860

In the cover story for this month's national geographic, american photojournalist stephen alvarez explores the vast underground of paris, france. the works document an entire world of lakes, gold vaults, catacombs, and tunnels, and the people who regularly shift between the surface and nether worlds.

located beneath the val-de-grâce hospital, this 12th century quarry supplied some of the stones used to build notre dame

paris's underground world is inhabited by a host of impermanent residents, ranging from the inspectors
who verify the stability of the city's foundations to the students and artists who make up the 'cataphile' populace of people who enjoy exploring the underground.

'the wave', painted by french graffiti artist pyscos in the style of hokusai, is located in a sand-floored area of the catacombs nicknamed the 'beach room'

part underground, part open-air, the canal st. martin is used here by the paris fire brigade for water training exercises

Some underground locations are open to the public, including the catacombs, a museum documenting the history of the french sewer system, and the ancient ruins that lie beneath the louvre and notre dame.

by contrast, entering the city's quarries and forgotten tunnels has been illegal since 1955, but many still explore the subterranean networks, creating maps of the regions or cobbling together their own secret rooms.

a cataphile explains: 'we do what we want here. we don't have rules. many people come down here to party, some people to paint. some people to destroy or to create or to explore.'

storing almost 3,000 tons of gold, the reserves of the bank of france lie 29 meters below street level

many parisian clubs, like chez georges bar depicted here, have small rooms underground that they open to customers

french artist giles carried nearly a ton of material through a 5km passage through the catacombs to prepare this site and work on his painting

once a wine cellar, this room is still known by cataphiles as 'le cellier'

Stockholm designer Axel Bjurström will present a collection of furniture including these wheeled side tables as part of the Greenhouse exhibition of work by young designers at Stockholm Furniture Fair this week.

Above and top: Dolly. The dolly side table takes care of the pile of magazines often found on the bottom shelf or on the floor next to the sofa. It uses the weight of the magazines to gain stability and the small wheels on the backside make it possible to move your pile around just like a hand dolly.
Called Dolly, the tables incorporate a bar to hold magazines, which in turn weight the piece.

Other products in Bjurström’s collection include a combined vase and candlestick, a tray in the shape of a wedding ring, makeup mirror and two chair designs.

Stockholm Furniture Fair takes place 8-12 February.

Clients are companies such as the Swedish fashion brand Filippa K, outdoor furniture company Nola, Panasonic etc. Exhibiting at Sthlm Furniture Fair is a first step towards focusing more on furniture and product design.

Above: Hammock Chair. The hammock chair is a simple tube rack with a more sophisticated free hanging textile. The seat is form sewed just like the knee on a pair of skipants that will adapt to your body and follow your movements just like a hammock.
The ambition is to find interesting companies for long term collaborations.

Here’s a bit of text from Ligne Roset:

ENTAILLES
“Viewing everyday life through the prism of objects which are surprising, yet sensible.”
Entailles by Philippe Nigro for Ligne Roset
Since 1999, Philippe Nigro has worked as a freelance designer; he is also an associate of the De Lucchi studio in Milan, where he works on numerous projects in the fields of product design, furniture and lighting design, interior architecture, promotional events and scenography.

To use the exact words of Philippe Nigro, these divans are ‘quasi-articulated’ by means of ‘functional notches’ which can accommodate small pedestal tables (for reading, writing, working, drinking, eating…). These simple details confer on the divans a whole new aesthetic totally at odds with conventional images, whilst making it possible to obtain different seat depths and back heights. In order to fully respond to the original idea, it is possible to have the notches in a different colour and/or fabric. The end result is a ‘living’ divan, which seems to be in constant movement.

Grafic design for bench

Bits Bench

'bits' bench by fulo

Swedish-based design studio fulo (olof nordenson and ulf n. jevin) will present their 'bits' bench
at the 2011 stockholm furniture fair.

The 'upholstery' of the furniture object is constructed of hundreds of small triangles cut from birch plywood. the result is a faceted, geometric surface which looks tough and hardy from its exterior, but when sat upon, one feels the softness and comfort of the bench's interior. 'bits' includes a bolster that acts as a pillow allowing it to be used either as a lounge bench or that can be adjusted to accommodate one's seating mannerisms.

the attached bolster can be adjusted along the length of the bench according to your seating mannerisms
