Monolo bringing the pointy toes back for Fall 2011

A Manolo Moment

Photo: Thomas Iannaccone
Footwear designer Manolo Blahnik has been in the business since the early seventies. Over the decades, there have been ups and downs, of course, but through it all, the man and the brand have achieved the status of a modern classic. The return of the pointy-toed pump for Fall has arbiters—Footwear News among them —calling it a Manolo moment. Blahnik himself demurs. “I have never had a perception about whether it’s my time or someone else’s time,” he told the paper. “I don’t think I have a time.”

If a Manolo is forever, though, that doesn’t mean now isn’t a very good time to indulge. The Blahnik classics look fresh once again. Highlighted in Fall 2011 Accessories Index. For fall, there are concessions to trends in the form of plaids, leopard prints, and the season’s must-have fur-trimmed sandal, but our favorite is the ankle-strap pointy pump, a ladylike standard that’s hallmark Blahnik. Dare we say it? Timeless.

What to Buy Now: Suede Boots

Old Navy suede bootie

The first of our suede boot purchases has arrived (a cute chukka boot look from Old Navy) for back to school for the high school senior. I love these boots (we chose olive) and think I'll also get them in my size in gray (at less than $40 a pop you can buy every color.)

Slither Into Fall's Sexy Python Trend

11

If last fall was the season of leopard, then this fall is definitely being taken over by python. Subtly textured, patterned python prints are insanely glam, but like leopard prints, if executed incorrectly, could look like they came out of Peggy Bundy's dressing room on the Married with Children set. Thankfully, plenty of designers have fashioned out some sleek new offerings of the reptilian variety. Think: Ready-for-anything shoes, slinky blouses, and statement skirts will all get you ready to meet your very own snake-charmer.

New Fashion Trend coming in Fall 2011 Sixties Revival

What Is It About The Sixties That Keeps Us Coming Back?

Photo: Marcus Tondo / GoRunway.com
The early sixties were a favorite reference point on the Fall runways, and as Fashionista recently pointed out, that’s led to an abundance of mod-themed editorials in the new September magazines. It’s worth adding that our culture’s current fascination with the youthquake years goes way beyond fashion. There’s Mad Men, of course, which is finally, officially beginning to produce its fifth season, but next month sees the release of two more decade-specific shows: Pan Am, starring Christina Ricci as a jet-age stewardess, and The Playboy Club, featuring twenty-first-century pinup Amber Heard as a Bunny at the original Chicago club. (Talk about male wish fulfillment!) Then there’s the big screen—and no, we’re not talking about the rumored fourth Austin Powers film. We’ll Take Manhattan is scheduled to come out next year and tells the tale of photographer David Bailey and model Jean Shrimpton’s era-defining fling. We know just the thing to wear to the premiere: a black and white fur coat from Christopher Bailey’s Shrimpton-inspired Burberry Prorsum collection.
